Approximately 2/3 of the American population own pets, with about half owning dogs. Dogs are widely reported to improve people's quality of life by encouraging regular exercise, increasing social interactions, and providing companionship above all. In fact, an entire community and economy has been built on the concept of "dog sports", or activities that engage people and their dogs in trained sports. Common activities include: obedience, agility, and protection sports, such as Schutzhund. Schutzhund is a 3-part protection sport that involves: obedience, tracking, and protection (bite-work). It is often considered the analog to police canine work. Schutzhund, however, is a sport that tests how well a handler can bring out a dog's intrinsic play drive while controlling it through high level obedience. We believe that many deserving and interested children, especially those in urban areas, should enjoy the opportunity to try dog sports, such as Schutzhund, and introduce them to potential careers in animal behavior, training, and even veterinary medicine.
